Procedure

1. **READ ALL the steps of this instruction set before proceeding and confirm that you understand all the steps clearly. If not, seek appropriate assistance before proceeding.**
2. Follow lock out/tag out procedures at all times. De-energize or discharge all hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, or thermal energy prior to beginning work.
3. Schedule shutdown with affected personnel, per the requirements of your district.
4. Make sure there is 3’ of clearance around the exterior of the emergency generator and that there is a clear pathway of egress away from the equipment in case of an emergency.
5. Only qualified personnel are to perform this work. Follow the equipment arc flash labeling indications of available incident energy and required proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). If arc flash labeling is not provided, assume hazard risk category "Dangerous.”
6. Hot parts can cause severe injury or death. Do not touch hot engine parts. The engine and exhaust system components become extremely hot during operation.
7. **WHEN PERFORMING CERTAIN FUNCTIONS ON THE GENERATOR, YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE THE GENERATOR FOR SAFETY PURPOSES**
8. When doing certain work tasks on the emergency generator, follow these precautions to prevent the starting of the generator set by an automatic transfer switch, remote start/stop switch, or engine start command from a remote computer.
9. Move the generator set master switch to the “OFF” position.
10. Disconnect the power to the battery charger.
11. Remove the battery cables, negative (–) lead first. Reconnect the negative (–) lead last when reconnecting the battery.
12. **VISUAL/AUDIBLE INSPECTION**
13. Record the current Running Hours from the engine's Hour Meter.
14. Start up the unit and do a visual and audible inspection of the entire unit looking and listening for problems. Use extreme care around running equipment.
15. Inspect the area around the unit for miscellaneous hardware that may have come loose from the unit and may need to be replaced.
16. Clean the exterior and interior of the unit of debris such as leaves, bird or bee’s nests, etc.
17. Check the door gasketing to ensure a tight seal. Repair or replace as necessary.
18. **INSPECTION OF GENERATOR SYSTEM**
19. Do a general inspection of the engine. Check for leaks, loose connections, cuts to wire insulation, missing parts, abrasions or deterioration, etc.
20. Check the engine oil level.
21. Check the engine coolant level.
22. Check for fluid leaks and the tightness of clamps and hoses.
23. Check the water pump for leaks and for proper operation.
24. Check that all shrouds, equipment covers, and guards are in place and securely fastened.
25. Check for loose electrical connections such as alternator, ignition coil, or spark plug wires.
26. Check the battery connections for tightness and signs of corrosion. Clean if necessary.
27. Check battery for electrolyte level and correct voltage per NAPA 110 – 8.3.6.
28. Check the battery for cracks and corrosion.
29. Defective batteries must be replaced immediately upon discovery of any defects. Refer to NFPA 110 – 8.3.6.2.
30. Check for leaks, hissing, and gas odor.
31. Check the block heater for proper operation.
32. Drain condensate trap on the exhaust system.
33. Check for exhaust system leakage.
34. Do a controller lamp test to make sure all are working correctly.
35. Do a general inspection of the control system. Inspect for cut wiring, loose connections, missing parts, deterioration, etc.
36. Do a general inspection of the associated electrical AC voltage system. Inspect for cut wiring, loose connections, missing parts, deterioration, etc.
37. Do a general inspection of the generator’s alternator system. Inspect for cut wiring, loose connections, missing parts, deterioration, etc.
38. Start up the unit and do another visual and audible inspection of the entire unit looking and listening for problems.
39. **EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM (EPSS) OPERATIONAL TEST**
40. The operational test shall be initiated at an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and must include testing of each EPSS component including the transfer of each ATS to the alternate power source for a period of not less than 30 minutes after the engine has reached normal operating temperature. Refer to NAPA 110 - 8.3.2.1 for further information.
41. The EPSS shall be initiated by simulating a power outage using the test switch(es) on the ATS for the Life Safety Systems.
42. The non-Life Safety ATSs should be initiated at least monthly to verify the starting function.
43. **INSPECTION OF EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM**
44. Refer to Title 34 PA Code, Chapter 50.61(l) for further information.
45. Systems shall be tested by simulating a building power failure by means of the life safety Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and associated equipment.
46. With the emergency generator operating the life safety system, a complete test of all emergency lighting and exit signage and circuits for satisfactory operation must be made each week.
47. When questioning the proper lumens, they should be measured at 30 inches above the floor as follows: (1) An intensity of 5/10 of a footcandle at exit doors, hallways, corridors, passageways, stairways, runways, ramps and the like, leading to the outside building exits.(2) An intensity of 25/100 of a footcandle at other locations requiring emergency lighting.
48. Record whether all the emergency and exit lights were working. If not, record whether they were repaired. If they were not repaired, record the reason why they were not repaired and what has been done to correct the problems.
49. A record of tests shall be maintained and shall be available for inspection requests.
50. Notify appropriate personnel of any building or room that lacks emergency sources of lighting. These rooms are not to be used until deficiencies are corrected.
51. **RETURN TO SERVICE**
52. Return the emergency power supply system back to normal operation with ATSs in the normal state.
53. Turn off the emergency generator.
54. Ensure that the system is set for automatic operation.
55. Record the hours from the engine’s Hours Meter after finishing the PM inspection.
56. **NOTIFY APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL THAT THE EMERGENCY GENERATOR IS IN SERVICE**
