Procedure

1. **READ ALL the steps of this instruction set before proceeding and confirm that you understand all the steps clearly. If not, seek appropriate assistance before proceeding.**
2. Use a Fire Extinguisher location map if available for the building you are inspecting so you can correctly identify each fire extinguisher location.
3. Ensure good visibility of the extinguisher and/or means of indicating the extinguisher location by signage.
4. Ensure there is unobstructed access to the extinguisher. No debris or material stacked in front of it.
5. Clean fire extinguisher, cabinet and door lens of dust or debris.
6. Check that nothing is hindering the easy removal of the fire extinguisher from its cabinet and/or bracket.
7. Check that the pressure gauge is not damaged and that it is reading or indicating in the operable range or position, not the "recharge" position.
8. Check that safety seals are not broken or missing.
9. Check that there is no evidence of physical damage, corrosion, or leakage.
10. Check the condition of the discharge hose and nozzle and that they are not clogged, cracked, or broken.
11. Check that the safety pin is in the proper position. Nothing else should be used in place of the safety pin.
12. Check that the handle is intact and not bent or broken.
13. Check the condition of the cabinet for broken cover, defective door hinges, etc. Note and repair any deficiencies or submit a work order to order parts and make necessary repairs.
14. Turn the extinguisher upside down and shake at least three times.
15. Check that the label, extinguisher type and instructions are clean and legible, turned outward and easy to read.
16. Each extinguisher shall have an inspection tag securely attached that indicates the month and year the inspection was performed and the initials of the person performing the inspection. When finished with the inspection, mark the month and year on the tag with your initials. If the tag is completely used, install a new tag and file the old tag for history retention.
17. Whenever an extinguisher is removed from service, immediately replace it with an extinguisher of a size and extinguishing agent appropriate for the hazard protected.
18. Records are to be kept of those extinguishers that were found to require correction, with a notation of when and how the corrections were made.
19. In addition to the required tags and/or labels, a permanent file record is to be kept for each extinguisher. This file record should include the following information as applicable:
20. a) The date when each extinguisher was purchased and installed.
21. b) The maintenance date and the name of the person or agency performing the maintenance.
22. c) The date when last recharged and the name of the person or agency performing the maintenance.
23. d) The hydrostatic retest date and the name of the person or agency performing the maintenance.
24. e) Description of dents remaining after passing a hydrostatic test.
