Procedure

1. **READ ALL the steps of this instruction set before proceeding and confirm that you understand all the steps clearly. If not, seek appropriate assistance before proceeding.**
2. Follow lock out/tag out procedures at all times. De-energize or discharge all hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, or thermal energy prior to beginning work.
3. With the boiler running, do a visual and audible inspection of the entire unit looking and listening for problems.
4. Inspect the boiler unit and associated piping and equipment for any fuel (oil and gas) or water leaks.
5. Inspect the area around the unit for hardware that may have come loose from the unit and may need replaced.
6. Confirm the boiler area is free of combustible materials and that there is nothing obstructing air openings, relief openings, etc.
7. **GAUGE SIGHT GLASS**
8. Check boiler water level in the gauge sight glass.
9. The gauge sight glass should be blown down daily so as to remove accumulated sediment from the valves.
10. Inspect the gauge glass for any signs of clouding or scratching. To examine for scratches, shine a bright concentrated light at about a 45 Deg angle. Anything that glistens brightly should be inspected closely. Any scratch which glistens and will catch a fingernail, or crescent-shaped or star-shaped mark is cause for replacement.
11. This is because scratches, corrosion, chips, and surface damage weaken the glass. If the inner surface appears cloudy or roughened, and will not respond to cleaning procedures, this is evidence of chemical attack. If severe, this is cause for replacement.
12. **INSPECT GAUGES, MONITORS, AND INDICATORS**
13. Make visual inspection of gauges, monitors, and indicators and record readings in boiler log. Compare the readings with previous reading for any non-normal readings that may indicate a problem. If the reading is not in the normal range, investigate the reason it is not. Make sure to include the following:
14. Water temperature readings and water pressure.
15. Make visual inspection and record the reading of the Oil Pump inlet vacuum.
16. Oil pressure at pump, burner, and/or regulating valve.
17. Stack temperature
18. **LOW WATER CUTOFF**
19. Check the low water cutoff operation by opening the blow down valve on the low water cutoff to remove rust and dirt and determine that the burner cuts out with low water in the sight glass. The boiler should cycle off when the water level drops below the control point of the low water cut-off. When the water level is restored, the boiler should cycle back on.
20. Immediate corrective action must be taken if the burner does not cut off with low water in the sight glass.
21. **BURNER DAILY CHECKLIST**
22. If running the boiler on natural gas, turn off the burner control switch and close pilot manual gas cock. Turn on the burner control switch and determine that burner flame safeguard locks out on flame failure before the main gas valve is energized.
23. Immediate corrective action must be taken if flame safeguard does not lock out to indicate flame failure.
24. Observe the operation of the boiler limit and operating controls to determine that the burner is being cut off at the proper setting. Adjust as required.
25. Check the burner and boiler control linkage to ensure it is working properly and is not loose or binding.
26. Check burner flame for any unusual changes.
27. **NOTIFY APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL OF ANY PROBLEMS OBSERVED AND/OR CORRECTED**
